About Talisman

We brought Talisman to Sturgeon Bay from Long Island in December 2002. The restoration of Talisman by Starboard Wooden Boatworks (Keith C. Kollberg & Crew) began in October 2003. The vast majority of the boat is the original Talisman.

Talisman on Sawyer Habor in Sturgeon BayThe Rhodes Cutter, designed in 1935, was one of several yachts designed by Philip L. Rhodes for Elihu Root, Jr. (son of the prominent American Statesman). The design was never built for Root and was later picked up by Harry MacDonald of Grey Boats, Thomaston, Maine, and sold as the Rhodes Cutter in 1938.

The boat is 37' 3" in length over all, 28' length on the water line, 9' 10" beam and 4'10 1/2" draft. Headroom throughout the cabin and in the after part of the stateroom is 6'2". The total sail area is 691 square feet, of which 165 are in the jib, 139 in the staysail and 387 in the mainsail. Mast is of Sitka spruce, hollow, and the boom of Oregon pine.

Construction is high grade, with oak framing and Philippine mahogany planking and white pine deck. The keel carries all the ballast, 7,750 pounds of iron.

The arrangement below is practical, with sleeping accomodations for four in cabin and stateroom. A toilet room separates these compartments and the galley is located aft.

In 2006 Talisman was voted as Best of Show of the Door County Maritime Museum's Classic and Wooden Boat Show.
